A motorist was shot in the neck as he sat in his car at an intersection in Southeast San Diego Sunday, apparently the victim of an attempted robbery.

Edward Estrada, 20, was stopped in traffic at 38th Street and National Avenue shortly before 3 p.m. when three men approached his car on foot, police said. One of the men threatened Estrada with a handgun and demanded he turn over his vehicle to them, according to police.

The three would-be robbers then began beating Estrada and one of the men shot him in the neck, said police. The suspects, described only as a black male, a Latino male and a Samoan male, fled.

Estrada was taken to UC San Diego Medical Center, where a nursing supervisor said he was in good condition and would probably be released today.
