More than $50,000 in damage was caused in a La Jolla fire Sunday night.

An electrical malfunction in a car parked in a garage in the 2400 block of Azure Coast Drive caused an estimated $25,000 damage to the structure, $20,000 to vehicles in the garage and $5,000 to the contents, Fire Department spokesman Larry Stewart said.

When firefighters arrived, they found two cars inside the garage completely engulfed in flames. One gas tank ruptured and blew up while the fire was being fought.

It took 20 firefighters about 30 minutes to control the fire, Stewart said. No injuries were reported.

The garage and the two cars were destroyed, and there were minor damages to a neighboring condominium roof, Stewart said.

The Metro Arson Strike Team is investigating, he said.
