Gary Stevens Rides Stocks Up to Win
Stocks Up, ridden by Gary Stevens, held off a late rally by Approved To Fly to win the $82,100 Sorrento Stakes for 2-year-old fillies Monday at Del Mar.
Stocks Up finished three-quarters of a length in front of Approved To Fly, with Lea Lucinda another 3 1/2 lengths behind in third.
Carrying 117 pounds, the winner was clocked in 1:23 2/5.
Stocks Up paid $5, $3.60 and $2.40. Approved To Fly, ridden by Eddie Delahoussaye, returned $4 and $2.80. The show payoff on Lea Lucinda, ridden by Chris McCarron, was $2.40.
Stocks Up briefly drew away from the pack in the upper stretch, then had enough left to hold off Approved To Fly.
Earlier in the day, apprentice jockey Steve Karr apparently escaped serious injury when he fell from his mount in the first race. The horse, Pan Delia, stumbled at the start. Karr, 23, was taken to Scripps Memorial Hospital in nearby La Jolla. Although X-rays were negative, Karr was kept in the hospital overnight for observation.
