The U.S. Forest Service has closed more than 300 acres of the Tahoe National Forest to the public after receiving an anonymous letter protesting plans to log in popular Deep Creek and warning that the area had been rigged with explosives. Gates to dirt roads into the fir and pine woods, located about five miles south of Truckee and west of California 89, were closed after the letter arrived, Joanne Roubique, the Truckee district ranger, said Saturday. Roubique said between 300 and 400 acres surrounding Deep Creek will be closed to the public while investigators search for any explosives, probably for about a month. Last month, foresters discovered that about 100 trees in the area had been “spiked” with 10-inch-long nails and railroad spikes.
