Axel Flores Advances in Wheelchair Tennis
Axel Flores of Santa Ana reached the semifinals Saturday in the singles and doubles competition of the Junior National Wheelchair Tennis Championships at Heritage Park in Irvine.
Flores defeated Ricky Carter, 8-2, in a singles quarterfinal and then teamed with Phong Le of Santa Ana to defeat Eric Swanson of Yorba Linda and Jeff Crawford of Placentia, 8-1, in doubles.
In other singles quarterfinals, Ryan Martin defeated Willie Hernandez, 8-2; Steve Welch defeated Javier Gonzalez, 8-3; and Jason Vandeek defeated Doug Stenbert, 8-4.
In other doubles quarterfinals, Martin and Welch defeated Gonzalez and Anthony Lara, 8-5. Hernandez and Eric Christensen of Irvine defeated Brad Zidek and Brad Stewart, 8-4. Vandeek and Rick Carter defeated Tam Albertson and Robert Licea, 8-0.
In the girls’ singles semifinals, Amy McKnight defeated Elizabeth Ostoich, 7-3. Gina Jalbert defeated Michelle Kruse, 6-1.
The tournament, which is for athletes 14-18, continues today at Heritage Park.
