Haute Hollywood on Parade

It’s probably the nature of the small screen that when it comes to fashion, the Emmy Awards tend to bring out . . . eclectic tastes of the stars.

At this year’s awards in Pasadena, clothes ranged from the sublime to the ridiculous. There was Emmy winner Jane Seymour looking Duchess of Windsor-ish (the role she wasn’t nominated for) in a slinky, beaded white gown by Fe Zandi of Beverly Hills and her hair swept back, Wallis Simpson-style.

And there was Peter DeLuise of “21 Jump Street” in a well-worn sharkskin suit tux that looked as if he had rescued it from some thrift store’s going-out-of-business sale. Who said TV wasn’t glamorous?

But there was glamour, brought by nominee Ann Jillian in what she called “sort of a Scarlett O’Hara dress,” a long black taffeta skirt topped off with a black velvet drop-waisted bodice accented with a huge black rose.

“I don’t know who designed it,” she said. “You wanna look?” she asked husband Andy Murcia, who obligingly hunted down the back of his wife’s dress.

“S-c-a-a-s-i,” he read off. “I don’t know,” he added, “it’s not Hickey-Freeman or anything like that.”

Nominee Sharon Gless--who lost to “Cagney & Lacey” co-star Tyne Daly--didn’t know the origin of her pouffy lavender gown with the taffeta skirt and chiffon beaded top, and didn’t bother to have anyone look. “I don’t remember who designed it,” she said. “It’s not new.”

Susan Dey of “L.A. Law” threw in a bit of tease with a lacy black jacket with nothing underneath and a tight black miniskirt.

Robin Givens’ see-through purple chiffon beaded top left nothing to the imagination. Givens’ husband, heavyweight champion Mike Tyson, arrived sans jacket, only a satin black and white herringbone vest over a tux shirt and pants. His right hand sported a cast--that accessory courtesy of a street brawl in New York last week with boxer Mitch Green.

And nominee Mary Tyler Moore chose a classy pink, lime green and white strapless Scaasi with a huge collar of faux jewels.

Kirstie Alley, nominated for her role on her first season in “Cheers,” had to have the bustle on her crimson gown repoufed by husband Parker Stephenson after they de-limoed. Alley, flying by photographers, managed to yell “Bob Mackie” to inquiring minds who wondered who did her dress.

Some younger stars opted for simple glamour, like Tracy Pollan’s Vicky Tiel shirred black mini with a cut-out back. She accessorized it with seamed stockings, pearls and her new husband, Michael J. Fox, winner of his third Emmy for “Family Ties.”

Tracey Ullman lived up to her cheeky reputation with a Rifet Osbek suit that looked like it was decorated with Haitian voodoo symbols done in sequins. A huge rhinestone cross hung from her neck, and her hair on one side was almost shaved, dyed blond and tied up with little fuchsia bows--”My tribute to British punk,” she said.

Few of TV’s male stars took chances with their requisite tuxedos.

If the Emmys had no equivalent in years past to Edy Williams, the “actress” who parades at the Oscars in various stages of undress, that may all change now, thanks to Jean Kasem.

The sometime actress and Amazonian wife of radio personality Casey Kasem wore a powder blue harem outfit complete with a tiara and beaded fringe. It was so . . . Emmys.
