Quarterback Marc Wilson was cut by the Green Bay Packers Monday as they reduced their roster for the start of the National Football League regular season.

Randy Wright was given the starting quarterback job a week ago, and Don Majkowski apparently earned the backup spot with his performance Saturday, when he led a pair of fourth-quarter touchdown drives and gave the Packers their only exhibition season victory, 27-24, over the New York Jets.

Wilson, who spent eight seasons with the Raiders, completed only 2 of 8 passes Saturday and fumbled to set up a Jet touchdown.

Wilson reportedly had a base salary of $550,000. The Green Bay Press-Gazette reported he already earned $125,000 in signing, reporting and training bonuses.

Blair Kiel remains on the roster as the third quarterback. Kiel has not played the last two weeks but won’t cost the Packers as much. Infante said the No. 3 quarterback will not be activated for games.

Wilson said he tried to get too much done in too short a time during his one quarter of play Saturday at Camp Randall Stadium in Madison, Wis.

“We didn’t score any touchdowns, so from that standpoint, it did (hurt),” he said. “I was pressing out there, trying to do too much.”

Packer Vice President Tom Braatz said Sunday that reports from two Washington TV stations concerning a trade with the Redskins were “total fabrication.”

According to the reports, the Redskins were about to trade unhappy quarterback Jay Schroeder to the Packers for holdout linebacker Brian Noble and two draft choices.
