Heavy Turbulence Buffets Jet; 10 Hurt
A USAir jetliner was buffeted Tuesday by heavy turbulence that slightly injured 10 people and prompted the pilot to divert the flight to Savannah International Airport for an unscheduled landing, officials said.
USAir Flight 333, a Boeing 737 en route from Pittsburgh, Pa., to Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., ran into the turbulence over Columbia, S.C., while flight attendants were trying to serve passengers a snack.
The “jolt of unexpected turbulence” tossed the plane around and threw several of the 115 people aboard the jet from their seats, injuring eight passengers and two flight attendants, USAir spokesman David Shipley said.
