Stevens Spills; McCarron Rides to Win
Rob An Plunder, ridden by Chris McCarron, maintained momentum after Bruho, the leader, unseated rider Gary Stevens in the upper stretch, and went on to win the $81,800 Balboa Stakes by 1 3/4 lengths Wednesday at Del Mar.
Mountain Ghost, under Alex Solis, finished second, a length in front of Pokarito, ridden by Martin Pedroza, in the Grade III race for 2-year-olds.
Bruho took command at the halfway point, then veered toward the middle of the track, causing Stevens to lose balance and tumble to the ground. Stevens was not seriously hurt.
Rob An Plunder covered seven furlongs on a fast track in 1:23 and earned $48,050 for the victory, his fourth straight in six starts.
Rob An Plunder paid $5, $3.20 and $2.60; Mountain Ghost returned $9.80 and $5.20, and Pokarito paid $3.80 to show.
