American League Roundup : Tigers End Long Day With Loss

It was a bad day for the Detroit Tigers.

It started with newly acquired Fred Lynn reporting to the team 10 minutes after the midnight trade deadline and being ruled ineligible for postseason play.

It ended with the Tigers losing to the Milwaukee Brewers, 6-2, at Detroit.

Mike Birkbeck (10-6) held the Tigers hitless for 4 innings, and Rob Deer keyed a five-run fifth inning with a two-run single to lead the Brewers.

Birkbeck, who is 8-1 since returning from the minor leagues 12 starts ago, allowed 4 hits in 5 innings. Chris Bosio pitched 3 hitless innings for the save.

The Eastern Division-leading Tigers have lost 8 of their last 10 games.

Lynn was used as the designated hitter and had one hit.

Toronto 5 Texas 1--Ernie Whitt homered, doubled and scored two runs to lead the Blue Jays to victory at Toronto.

Jimmy Key (9-4) scattered six hits in eight innings, striking out five and walking two. Tom Henke pitched the ninth for the save.

Charlie Hough (11-15) held the Blue Jays hitless for 3 innings, until Whitt ignited a three-run rally by connecting on a 2-and-0 pitch for his 11th home run.

The Rangers scored their only run in the second inning when Oddibe McDowell doubled, stole third and scored on Scott Fletcher’s infield single.

Kansas City 5 Minnesota 2--Mark Gubicza beat the Twins for the second time in five days, and Jamie Quirk knocked in two runs at Minnesota.

Gubicza (17-7) struck out a club-record 14 batters Aug. 27 to beat the Twins, 4-1. The All-Star right hander struck out eight and walked none Thursday. It was Gubicza’s third straight complete-game victory.
