Schroeder Deal May Be Done

Amid widespread speculation Saturday that a deal for Washington Redskins quarterback Jay Schroeder is done and will be announced after the National Football League openers, Raider Coach Mike Shanahan completed preparations for his first game.

So, is Schroeder coming to Los Angeles? Shanahan’s answer was neither confirmation nor denial.

“Jay Schroeder is not a Raider,” he said. “I’m not going to get into speculation on any aspect of someone coming to our team. What I’d like to do is focus totally on the San Diego Chargers.”

However, several Raider players and coaches said privately they believe a deal is set.

Redskin General Manager Bobby Beathard told Washington reporters that the teams last talked Thursday but didn’t accomplish much. Beathard said: “I don’t think anyone will talk again until after the games.”

The Raiders play today at the Coliseum; the Redskins play the New York Giants at East Rutherford, N.J., Monday night.
