Inland Surfing Meet Begins Today at Wild Rivers
The 12th stop on the U.S. Pro Tour of Surfing and Bodyboarding begins today at the Wild Rivers Water Theme Park in Irvine.
The event, which has a purse of $17,000, takes place in the wave pool at the park. It is the third tour event in history to be held inland.
Mike Lambresi of Carlsbad, the defending tour champion, is among the top surfers expected to compete. Lambresi also leads this year’s tour with 7,784 points.
The Irvine event is worth 1,000 points for first place. Dino Andino of San Clemente (7,238) is in second place on the tour and Jim Hogan, also of San Clemente, is in third with 6,700. Defending champion Kelly Slater of Cocoa Beach, Fla. is also expected to compete.
