Loyola Marymount won its opener in the four-team Registry Anteater Volleyball Invitational at UC Irvine, but dropped its final two matches including a four-set contest with the host Anteaters Saturday night. The Lions defeated Utah State on Friday, but fell to Baylor in a hard-fought five games Saturday, 15-7, 11-15, 1-15, 16-14, 15-13. In the tournament finale, Irvine defeated the Lions, 15-7, 5-15, 15-10, 15-8.

Lions seniors Leslie Wohlford and Seham Khalaf were named to the all-tournament team. Wohlford had 11 kills against Irvine and 22 against Baylor. Khalaf got 11 assists and 7 kills against Irvine and 21 assists and 12 kills in the Baylor match. Loren Newman added 13 assists against Irvine and 23 against Irvine, while Tina Hammers had 12 kills against Baylor.

The Lions, 1-3, play at home Tuesday night against Cal State Long Beach.

In men’s soccer, Loyola fell to powerful Portland, 4-0, at Loyola. The Pilots, now 4-0, expanded on a 1-0 half-time lead as Scott Benedetti scored three goals and assisted on the fourth. Portland took 28 shots on goal to Loyola’s 2. Lions goalie Parker Schenken recorded 14 saves. Loyola, 0-2, plays next at Cal Lutheran on Tuesday.
