From Staff and Wire Reports

Pat Cash has withdrawn from the Volvo tennis tournament next week at the Los Angeles Tennis Center at UCLA because of a foot injury.

Cash, the world’s No. 6-ranked player and the 1987 Wimbledon champion, previously withdrew from the recently concluded U. S. Open when an Achilles’ tendon problem resurfaced.

Also bothered by a bad back, Cash has played only two tournaments since Wimbledon, where he lost to Boris Becker in the quarterfinals.

Cash has won $184,423 this year and ranks 23rd on the money list. His withdrawal, which will be announced today, still leaves two top 10 players in the field--No. 2 Ivan Lendl and No. 4 Andre Agassi--in addition to No. 24-ranked John McEnroe.

The tournament begins Monday with first-round matches. The final is Sunday.
