A musician sitting outside a bar was fatally wounded over the weekend by a single bullet fired from a passing car, police said.

Hector Alvarez, 32, of Anaheim died at 9 p.m. Saturday at UCI Medical Center in Orange, Sgt. Bud Lathrop said.

Police have no suspects in the Friday night shooting, he said.

Alvarez and another band member were taking a break outside the El Tenampa bar in the 100 block of West Santa Fe Avenue shortly before 10 p.m. Friday, Lathrop said, when someone in a late-model Chrysler sedan shot Alvarez with a handgun as the car passed by about 50 feet away.

The bullet struck Alvarez in the arm and entered his abdomen, Lathrop said. Police found the casing to a .38-caliber bullet nearby.

It appeared that the gunman’s intended victim was Alvarez and that it was not a random shooting, Lathrop said.

“Someone was looking for someone,” he said.

Lathrop said police did not know the motive for the shooting. He said police have made many narcotics arrests at the bar in the past.
