Washington Redskins Coach Joe Gibbs said unheralded reserve Mark Rypien is “extremely well prepared” for his new role as the starting quarterback for the defending Super Bowl champions after Doug Williams’ emergency appendectomy.

Rypien will start for the Redskins Sunday in Tempe, Ariz., against the Phoenix Cardinals.

“Rip is one of our most studious and bright guys,” Gibbs said. “We’ve kind of staked things on the fact that he’s the guy.”

Williams will be out 4 to 8 weeks.

The team signed fifth-year quarterback David Archer as a backup behind Rypien. Archer, 26, played 4 years with the Atlanta Falcons.

The Redskins were left with Rypien as their backup after the Sept. 5 trade that sent unhappy veteran Jay Schroeder, a 1986 Pro Bowl selection, to the Raiders in exchange for offensive tackle Jim Lachey and draft picks. Schroeder will make his first start for the Raiders Monday night against the Broncos in Denver.
