The 35,000-acre Vacaville brush fire in Northern California was declared controlled after destroying seven homes and forcing the temporary evacuation of 500 people. Damage was estimated at $1.8 million. The California Department of Forestry began demobilizing 2,000 firefighters who had fought the blaze for a week.
