Second Place Still Gets Rose 2-Year Contract

Pete Rose signed a 2-year contract Friday to continue as manager of the Cincinnati Reds, despite their fourth consecutive second-place finish.

Owner Marge Schott had given Rose a wedding veil on opening day, an indication that she expected the team to stop being a bridesmaid this season, and when the club slid to 35-42 on July 1, leaving them 10 games out of first place, speculation started that Schott would fire Rose.

The Reds’ 344 victories during Rose’s 4 years as manager are the most by any National League West team.

“I think it’s a matter of time before we get to the playoffs,” Rose said.
