Roberto Duran moved a step closer Saturday night to what he hopes will be a shot at the World Boxing Council middleweight championship, scoring a 10-round split decision over Jeff Lanas in Chicago.

Duran, 37, a former world champion in two weight classes, floored Lanas, 26, with a second-round uppercut, though he had the round taken from him because the blow was low. He then survived a furious assault in the final two rounds.
