Local News in Brief : Rare Coins Worth $500,000 Stolen
Rare gold and silver coins, worth about $500,000, were taken from the trunk of a visiting coin trader’s car as he sat nearby in a Marina del Rey restaurant, authorities said Monday.
William Byrd, of Ocean Springs, Miss., told police that three boxes of the U.S. commemorative coins, along with a garment bag of expensive clothes, were taken from his trunk while he and his wife had dinner Sunday.
Byrd said he believed that the thief followed him when he left a coin show at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Long Beach on Sunday afternoon. When Byrd and his wife returned to the car after dinner, they found that the trunk had been pried open, Sheriff’s Deputy Kathryn Nielsen said.
