Program for JazzTimes Convention

The seventh annual JazzTimes Convention, a gathering of 1,000 representatives of all parts of the jazz community, is being held for the first time in Los Angeles (earlier conventions took place in Washington, where the magazine is based, and New York), today through Saturday at the Sheraton-Universal Hotel.

Following are some of the events:

Wednesday--Performance by the Bud Shank Quartet and Buell Neidlinger’s Thelonious, 10:30 a.m. Welcoming address by Steve Allen, 2 p.m. “I Paid My Dues,” a panel discussion with Stan Getz, others, 2:30 p.m. Performance by Supersax, 7 p.m.

Thursday--Keynote address by Ricky Schultz of MCA Records, 1:30 p.m. “The Leaders,” panel discussion with Dr. Billy Taylor, Rep. John Conyers, others, 3:30 p.m. Performance by Henry Johnson Quartet, 7:30 p.m.

Friday--”Japan and Jazz,” panel discussion with Kiyoshi Koyama, Helen Merrill and others, noon; Stan Getz reminiscing about his career, 5 p.m.; performance with Billy Mitchell, featuring John Bolivar, 6:30 p.m.

Saturday--”Where Is the Black Audience for Jazz?” panel discussion with John Levy, others, 5 p.m. Closing party with Tuck & Patti, Denny Zeitlin Trio, 7:30 p.m.

Admission to individual panels is $20; for a full day’s attendance registration is $99, for the full four-day convention $229, $89 for spouses, $69 for students.
