College Roundup : UC Irvine Falls, 8-7, to Stanford in Water Polo

Erik Blum scored with 57 seconds remaining in overtime to lead Stanford to an 8-7 victory over UC Irvine Saturday in a nonconference water polo match at Palo Alto.

The Cardinal, third-ranked in the National Collegiate Athletic Assn., overcame a 4-1 deficit at halftime. Stanford scored four goals in the fourth quarter, including Steve Milhan’s with 42 seconds remaining in regulation to tie the score.

Tom Warde and John Redd each scored twice to lead the sixth-ranked Anteaters (7-7). Rick McNair scored three goals to lead Stanford (14-4).

At the Caltech water polo tournament:

Chapman 9, Chaminade 7--Sophomore Tom Moran scored 4 goals and goalie Eric Wetzel had 15 saves to lead the Panthers (2-8).

In men’s nonconference cross-country:

Fresno Pacific 15, Chapman 50--Brian Hoylar (31:28) placed eighth on the 5-mile course to lead Chapman at Fresno’s Woodward Park.

In women’s nonconference cross-country:

Fresno Pacific 21, Chapman 37--Kyla Town (21:39) placed fourth on the 5,000-meter course to lead the Panthers at Fresno’s Woodward Park.

In men’s Golden State Conference soccer:

Christ College Irvine 1, Fresno Pacific 0--Jonathan Bergen, a freshman from Vienna, Austria, scored at the 56-minute mark for the victory at Irvine. Christ College Irvine is 4-5-1 overall and 1-2 in conference play.

In CCAA men’s soccer:

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 2, Chapman 0--Dan Campbell and Amin Sadam scored second-half goals to lead San Luis Obispo (5-4-1, 3-0-1) at Chapman. The Panthers are 6-7 and 0-3.

In Big West Conference women’s volleyball:

UC Irvine 3, Pacific 2--Kim Collins had 14 kills and Kris Roberts 13 to lead the Anteaters (9-6, 2-5) to a 15-6, 14-16, 15-6, 13-15, 15-8 victory at home. It was Irvine’s first victory over Pacific (8-8, 3-3) in the schools’ 13-match history.

UC Santa Barbara 3, Cal State Fullerton 1--LeAnna Hebert had 19 kills to lead UCSB (9-8, 4-4) to a 12-15, 15-6, 15-2, 15-2 victory at home. Susan Herman and Cyndi Rhone each had 14 kills for Fullerton (8-11, 0-5).

In nonconference women’s volleyball:

Pacific Christian College 3, Azusa Pacific 0--Jenny Fish had 13 kills and Kris Dodson 11 to lead the Deacons (17-15) to a 15-11, 15-8, 15-11 victory at Cal State Fullerton.
