After finally receiving the safety go-ahead from British authorities, French New Age musician-showman Jean-Michel Jarre went ahead with his mammoth “Son et Lumiere” show in the Docklands area of east London on Saturday night. Tens of thousands of fans packed the waterfront as Jarre, who last year helped celebrate the sesquicentennial of Texas in Houston, conducted his musicians from a control center on a floating stage made of 12 barges anchored together in the River Thames. In September, the east London borough of Newham canceled the $8.5-million show with 12 days notice because of safety fears. Jarre was allowed to go ahead this weekend after safety problems with the vast grandstand and the emergency lighting system were overcome only hours before the show started. Jarre has sold more than 32 million albums, but until now had only performed live four times.
