It was a bad-luck day for the Casares cousins of San Diego.

Antonio Mendez Casares, 19, and his cousin Antonio Alcaras Casares, 32, were picked up Saturday by Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies along Interstate 5 in Gorman as they were pushing a truck that had been reported stolen in San Diego. Minutes before, the two had tried to steal a newer truck--this one a Fire Department truck with a full tank of gas, said Lt. Dennis Burns.

Sunday, the two were in jail for grand theft auto and attempted grand theft auto.

“When luck’s bad, it’s all bad,” Burns said.

Burns said the two men were trying to steal a pickup truck used by the Los Angeles County Fire Department in Gorman when a firefighter saw them. The two men ran to their truck and sped off down the freeway before running out of gas--within sight of the fire station.

They were picked up near California 138.
