State investigators suspect that the extremely toxic chemical dioxin may be present in some of six contaminated sites found in the Kern County communities of Mojave and Rosamond, a Mojave newspaper reported. According to the Mojave Desert News, documents filed by state investigators said they suspected that dioxin may be present in at least some of the two contaminated sites found recently in Rosamond and four in Mojave. The sites ranged from an illegal dump, where barrels of motor and lubricating oils were left, to sites where illegal substances were burned. The discovery of the six additional sites in the two communities brought to 12 the number of contaminated sites found in the towns since last year as the state continues its investigation of childhood cancer clusters in the central and southern San Joaquin Valley.
