A skyscraper fire in Rio de Janeiro left one man dead and 54 hospitalized, but about 400 people escaped the blaze by clambering across the roof or through holes pounded in walls by firemen. The fire started on the second floor of the Banco de Brasil office in the financial heart of the city and ravaged six floors of the 21-story structure. The cause of the fire was not immediately known. Rescuers pulled 55 people who had fainted from smoke inhalation from the bank and sent them to hospitals. One man died in the hospital. The blaze destroyed many vital records of the bank’s foreign trade office.
