Stockton Unified School District will ask a court for permission to end a busing plan implemented 12 years ago to desegregate classrooms. Trustees voted to seek court approval to return to a neighborhood school system. Officials estimated that 13,000 to 14,000 students--almost half the total enrollment--now are bused to achieve racial balance. “Analyzing where people live, not where they go to school, and using existing attendance areas, it was thought that all but 11 of our schools could return to neighborhood status,” said John Klose, district information officer. He said four of the 11 schools also might be acceptable as neighborhood schools because they are paired with other schools, leaving seven that would present “a significant problem with the court.”
