THE FALL CLASSIC

When Dodger ace Orel Hershiser struck out the Mets’ Howard Johnson to capture the National League flag Wednesday night, KROQ-FM’s (106.7) morning deejay Jim (The Poorman) Trenton won his bet with Regis Philbin. Trenton----he of the bushy mustache, unkempt long hair, Tommy Lasorda beer belly and psychedelic surfer pants--will appear Wednesday as the natty Philbin’s guest co-host on the nationally syndicated “Live With Regis and Cathie Lee.” Trenton promised to accept a dare--proposed by his KROQ listeners and accepted by Philbin--to appear live on Regis’ New York-based show (seen locally on KHJ-TV Channel 9 at 9 a.m.) . . . even, as Philbin suggested, if it means getting his head shaved bald. If the Mets had prevailed, Philbin would have won the right to torture Trenton’s rock audience here in Los Angeles with an hour of Perry Como classics.

And speaking of the Mets: In its October 10th issue, New York magazine blazes the faces of Mets Dwight Gooden and Darryl Strawberry and places the trumpeting headline--”The Mighty Mets”--right above them. Lo, how the mighty have fallen. . . .
