One of the problems in listening to a play on home video is catching the words on a usually muddied videotape soundtrack. When you add music, the problem becomes worse; add the sophisticated lyrics of Stephen Sondheim and only repeated replays can help. That is one reason the digital sound on this disc is welcome. The clarity and precision of the digital technology make it possible to hear every word of this superb production of the Pulitzer Prize-winning musical. The clearer image also makes it easier to appreciate the superb set and staging (given little help in this too-busy video re-creation of the original-cast production starring Mandy Patinkin and a slightly hoarse Bernadette Peters).
