Army players heard and read all week that their schedule was weak, that beating Division I-AA opponents tainted their record and that they didn’t belong on the same field with Rutgers.

The Cadets (6-1) answered those charges Saturday by winning their fifth straight game as sophomore halfback Mike Mayweather ran for 3 touchdowns in a 34-24 victory over Rutgers at East Rutherford, N.J.

“This one was big for us,” Mayweather said. “We proved ourselves. There were a couple of articles in the newspapers that got us fired up. It made us look like a Division I-AA school, like we couldn’t play. People don’t realize that Holy Cross and Lafayette are good teams.”

Mayweather scored on runs of 1, 4 and 8 yards, and Sean Jordan capped a 21-point second-quarter outburst with a 41-yard touchdown run on a reverse.

Army jumped to a 24-0 lead by halftime, outgaining Rutgers, 285-74, and limiting the Scarlet Knights (4-3) to 9 yards passing and 3 first downs.

Army, the nation’s No. 3 rushing offense with an average of 378.2 yards, rolled up 372 yards on the ground and finished with 420 yards of total offense in beating the Scarlet Knights for only the 3rd time in their last 10 meetings.

Rutgers, which had upset Michigan State and Penn State, drew to within 27-17 on a 7-yard touchdown run by quarterback Scott Erney with 7:34 to play. Army answered with a 69-yard touchdown drive, capped by an 8-yard run by Mayweather, who rushed for 115 yards.
