Beautification Group Gives Annual Awards

Actor Eddie Albert, Ambassador College in Pasadena, Nissan Motor Corp. in Carson, the city of Port Hueneme and car wash operations in Lakewood and Temple City were honored at the 31st annual Los Angeles Beautiful Business and Industry Awards program at the Los Angeles Hilton.

The awards, presented by Los Angeles Beautiful, a nonprofit organization supported by voluntary contributions from business, industry and interested individuals, honors individuals and firms for their efforts to improve and beautify the city.

David V. Adams, president, and Virginia M. Baldwin, chairman of the board, presented the group’s Valley Knudsen Award to Albert for his efforts to improve the environment and his advocacy of tree planting, organic gardening, recycling and conservation. The award was named after the late civic leader and founder of Los Angeles Beautiful.

Color in Landscaping

The various properties nominated for annual awards are judged for their use of color in landscaping, maintenance, screening of parking and utility areas, blending of plant life with architecture and effect on the surrounding neighborhood.

The city of Port Hueneme received the group’s special award, citing Hogan-Roy Partners, landscape architects, and John R. Velthoen, city manager.

A 20-year maintenance award was presented to Ambassador College for the continuing care of its Pasadena campus, owned by Worldwide Church of God.

Nissan Motor Corp. headquarters in Carson, Chevron U.S.A. Inc., operator of the Bubble Machine, a Lakewood car wash, and the Temple City Car Wash, received 10-year maintenance awards.

The 24 other award winners were American Honda Motor Co., Torrance; Continental Development Corp., El Segundo; First Financial Plaza, Encino; Four Seasons Hotel; Harris Homes offices, Palos Verdes; Home Savings of America, Northridge; Ingleside Hospital, Rosemead.

Also, Irvine Hilton, Irvine; James Mall Car Wash, Thousand Oaks; Long Beach Airport Business Park, Long Beach Marriott Hotel, Los Angeles Hilton, McDonald’s Restaurant, Lakewood; McDonnell Douglas Building, Cypress; Meralta Office Plaza, Culver City; Metrobank/Paine Webber Builder, Warner Center, Woodland Hills; Newporter Resort, Newport Beach; Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks, Pacific Region Headquarters and Service Yard, Harbor City; Sizzler Restaurant, Torrance; Sony Corp., Cypress; South Pasadena Post Office, Thousand Oaks Library, Union Bank, Monterey Park, and The Village, Lakewood.
