Local News in Brief : Sea Lion Dies From Gunshot Wounds
Bruno, a California sea lion that made the Harbor Patrol dock in Redondo Beach his home for the past two years, died this week of two gunshots he sustained about two months ago, officials said. Marine life specialists were called to help Bruno but couldn’t because he evaded capture.
Bruno is the second sea lion in two weeks in the King Harbor and marina area to die from violence. A sea lion, which boaters called Bobo, was killed two weeks ago when it was fed an explosive device hidden inside a fish, Harbor Master Wayne Sankey said.
The National Marine Fisheries Service is investigating the killings. Maliciously killing a sea lion is a misdemeanor, punishable by a fine of up to $20,000 and up to a year in jail. The Fund For Animals Inc., a Torrance-based animals rights group, is offering a $500 reward for information leading to the arrest of Bobo’s killer.
