PREP FOOTBALL : Pacific Coast League Roundup : Woodbridge, Yurkovich Roll, 17-7

Mike Yurkovich’s two touchdowns and the stingy Woodbridge defense led to a 17-7 victory over Laguna Beach Friday night at Guyer Field, ensuring the Warriors at least a share of the Pacific Coast League title.

Yurkovich, also an anchor of the Woodbridge defense at linebacker, scored on runs of 1 and 9 yards as the Warriors (9-0 overall, 4-0 in league) won their 13th consecutive game. The victory also avenged Woodbridge’s only loss in 2 years, to the Artists last year.

“We watched the films of last year’s game when they kicked us up and down the field,” Woodbridge Coach Rick Gibson said. “I’m sure it was an incentive for the kids. But we knew this would give us at least a piece of the championship, that’s the important part of this game.”

Yurkovich’s first touchdown came on the Warriors’ first possession. Woodbridge drove 84 yards in 13 plays with Yurkovich scoring from the 1 with 6:48 left in the quarter. The Warriors added a 33-yard field goal by Troy Holmes late in the second quarter to take a 10-0 lead at halftime.

The rest of the scoring came in the final 45 seconds of the game. On fourth down and 6 from his own 10, Laguna Beach quarterback Aaron Scheid was sacked by Gary Gibson. Two plays later, Yurkovich scored his second touchdown.

The Warriors were denied their fourth shutout of the season when Artist junior Jason Clarke returned the ensuing kickoff 93 yards for a touchdown with 31 seconds left. Warrior senior quarterback Fred Schweer had a big passing night for Woodbridge, completing 16 of 26 passes for 210 yards. He also had two passes intercepted.
