Aztecs Win to Give Clegg 100th Victory

San Diego State’s men’s soccer team gave Coach Chuck Clegg his 100th victory in convincing fashion Friday night as the Aztecs routed Loyola Marymount, 12-0, at the Aztec Bowl.

Kyle Whittemore, making the last home appearance of his career, scored 3 goals to lead the Aztecs (15-2-3).

Clegg’s career record is 100-37-15.

BASKETBALL

Keith Smith hit a layup at the buzzer as host California defeated San Diego-based Athletes in Action, 79-77. Zack Jones scored 22 points and Anthony Watson added 16 for AIA (1-4). Leonard Taylor and Ryan Drew scored 19 apiece for Cal.

SOCCER

Jorge Sanchez’s goal in the fourth round of the second shootout gave Cal State Los Angeles the victory over U.S. International in the USIU Soccer Classic.

Regulation play ended in a 1-1 tie and it remained 1-1 after two 10-minute overtimes. The teams then had two 4-shot shootouts to determine a winner.

Robbie Peeleman scored with 12 seconds left in the first half of regulation for USIU (5-10-1). Carlos Zuvala scored with 5 minutes left in regulation for CS Los Angeles (9-9-1).

CS Los Angeles plays USD at 1 p.m. today in the second round.

VOLLEYBALL

Michelle Hansen had 21 kills as Cal Poly San Luis Obispo defeated San Diego State in 5 games in a Big West Conference match at Peterson Gym.

Unranked Cal Poly SLO (16-9, 3-9) won, 7-15, 15-4, 15-13, 6-15, 15-10. Jackie Mendez had 21 kills and Kim Washington added 19 for 12th-ranked SDSU (21-8, 8-6).

UC San Diego rallied from a 2-0 deficit for a 14-16, 11-15, 15-10, 15-0, 15-4 nonleague victory over Cal State Los Angeles at La Jolla Friday.

Diana Klintworth led UCSD (30-8) with 14 kills.

CROSS COUNTRY

San Diego Mesa College won the women’s and men’s team titles at the Pacific Coast Conference Championships at Balboa Park. Mesa (28 points) outdistanced San Diego City College (49) in the men’s 4-mile race and finished ahead of Mira Costa (34-53) in the women’s 3.1-mile race.

Individual titles went to San Diego City College’s Jorge Montes in 21 minutes and Southwestern’s Carol-Lynn Polk in 19:38.
