The second of two gunmen suspected of firing into a children’s Halloween party, wounding Cal State Long Beach football player Mark Seay as he tried to shield a youngster, has surrendered to police, authorities said Saturday.

Paul Lanier, 22, of Long Beach, was convinced by his parents to meet police Friday evening, Lt. Columbus Lowe said. Officers began talking with Lanier’s parents Monday, when he was identified as a suspect.

Lanier was booked on suspicion of assault with a firearm and held without bail. The other suspect, a 17-year-old reputed gang member arrested shortly after the Sunday shooting, was being held on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon.

Seay, 21, was in good condition Saturday at Memorial Medical Center, after doctors removed a kidney pierced by the shot, but left the bullet, which was lodged near his heart. Hospital spokesman Richard Cox said that Seay would probably be released early next week but that his football career may be hindered by his injury.
