A 16-year-old boy riding a bicycle on the Dyer Road off-ramp of the Costa Mesa Freeway at 4:05 a.m. Tuesday was struck from behind by a car and thrown against its windshield but survived, the California Highway Patrol reported.

Officers said the driver of the car, who was traveling 45 m.p.h. on the southbound off-ramp, saw the cyclist just before striking him and slammed on his brakes. The car skidded into the cycle and the cyclist crashed into the windshield, shattering it.

But the cyclist received only moderate lacerations and a concussion, according to the CHP. He was “doing well” at Western Medical Center, Santa Ana, where he was listed in stable condition, according to a hospital spokeswoman.
