Torrey Pines Spoils Poway’s Party, Reaches Finals Against Bonita Vista

When Poway lost to Bonita Vista in the finals of the San Diego Section girls’ tennis team championship in 1986, Coach Evi Yarnell said, “Always the bridesmaid, never the bride.” Then in 1987, Poway marched down the aisle and claimed the ring.

This year, however, Poway isn’t even in the wedding party.

Torrey Pines, the runner-up last year and top seed this season, defeated Poway, 9-2, in a 3-A semifinal match Thursday at the Rancho Santa Fe Tennis Club.

This marks the first year since 1982 that Poway has been excluded from the section finals.

Torrey Pines will meet Bonita Vista, winner of the other semifinal, Saturday at 11 a.m. at Bishop’s in La Jolla.
