Local News in Brief : Westminster : Computers Aid Students in Studies of English
Coastline Community College’s English-as-a-second-language program is using computers to help students at its Westminster Center.
The new program is called PALS, an acronym for Principle of the Alphabet Literacy System. The program simultaneously teaches students how to read, write and touch-type.
PALS incorporates two types of teaching screens on computers. One is used to teach reading and writing, and the other is used to teach typing. Both screens utilize cartoons to dramatize the written and spoken word.
“Students learn to write every word in the English language by hearing how the letters of the alphabet sound when combined,” said Adeline Bingham, director of Coastline’s Basic Skills Center.
The Westminster Center is at 13521 Edwards St., and enrollment in the PALS program is open through Dec. 1 on a space-available basis, college officials said. Registration information is available by calling (714) 891-5497.
