A female gibbon at the San Diego Zoo, which was bitten by her mate during an apparent squabble Sunday and suffered serious arm and leg wounds, remained in fair condition at the zoo’s hospital Friday, a zoo spokesman said.

Zookeepers did not see what caused the fight, which broke out before the zoo opened, spokesman Jeff Jouett said.

“The fight was a total surprise,” Jouett said. “Supposedly, they had lived together at the Surakarta Zoo in Indonesia.”

The gibbon, which was brought to the zoo two months ago, had her arm and leg stitched and is expected to return to her enclosure within the next few weeks.
