Helping Children

Share

We have ignored our children far too long, and the seeds of this neglect are visiting us on the streets. Something has to be done. That is why I was so pleased to see what the Urban League of San Diego is trying to do.

I called the Urban League to express my encouragement, and I discovered more impressive information.

It took Herb Cawthorne and others more than six months to work out the relationships to bury the division and design a major effort of cooperation to deal with gang and youth employment. The city of San Diego was smart to put $150,000 in a joint venture with the Private Industry Council--all told, the city gets almost $800,000 in services for just $150,000 in investment. Now that’s a wise use of taxpayers’ money.

What is going to be done is not much, given the size of the problem. But the Urban League should be commended for having the vision and determination to bring organizations together to create a powerful focus on a major community problem. They have my support.
