La Verne : Election on Fireworks Ban

Share

The City Council last week approved a citywide election for Feb. 7 to decide the fate of fireworks in the city.

The ballot will read: “Shall the sale and use of fireworks be prohibited in the city of La Verne as provided by ordinance 765 as adopted by the City Council on Aug. 15, 1988?”

The special election was backed by fireworks distributors and community groups, such as La Verne-San Dimas Pop Warner and the La Verne Lion’s Club, which stand to lose thousands of dollars in revenue each year if the sale of fireworks is outlawed.

The organizations gathered enough signatures on petitions to force the council to either rescind the ordinance or hold a special election.
