The American Cancer Society has designated today as Great American Smokeout day, the 12th annual attempt to get smokers to kick the habit.
Up to 110,000 of the county’s estimated 550,000 smokers will try to abstain from lighting up, according to the society. Last year, more than 1 million of California’s 5 million smokers quit for the day.
Expectant mothers are one of the major target groups for this year’s event. Some area hospitals will be giving T-shirts that say “I’m a Born Nonsmoker” to newborn babies.
The cancer society said a special effort is being made this year to raise cancer awareness in the Vietnamese and Latino communities. Trained volunteers will visit community centers and make presentations.
At 12:30 p.m., participants may attend a victory party at the Dana Point Resort, 25135 Street of the Park Lantern, where a free lunch of cold-turkey sandwiches will be served.
