Local News in Brief : Cityhood Election to Be Held March 7
Los Angeles County supervisors Thursday scheduled a special election March 7 in Diamond Bar to determine whether the unincorporated San Gabriel Valley bedroom community of 60,000 should become the county’s 86th city.
The county Local Agency Formation Commission approved an incorporation application in July after more than 7,000 residents signed cityhood petitions.
This will be Diamond Bar’s third try at forming a city. Voters rejected incorporation by a margin of 230 out of 6,696 votes cast in 1983. A campaign in 1986 died when incorporation backers failed to collect enough signatures on petitions.
Phyllis Papen, president of the Diamond Bar Improvement Assn., said support for incorporation has grown over the last five years because residents have seen the need for local control over matters such as traffic congestion and housing density.
