Even his coach and teammates are running out of words to describe Steve Yzerman.

“What’s to say?” Detroit Red Wings Coach Jacques Demers said after Yzerman had 2 goals and an assist Friday night in a 5-2 victory over the Boston Bruins at Detroit. “He does it every night.”

Yzerman has 10 goals and 9 assists in his last 8 games. And the Red Wings, perhaps not coincidentally, have won 6 in a row to move to the top of the National Hockey League’s Norris Division.

Yzerman, who scored 102 points last season before a knee injury caused him to miss the final 16 games, has 36 points this season, including 18 goals, third-best in the league.

“We didn’t get many shots on goal, so it was important that we capitalized on the turnovers,” Yzerman said. “The chances we got tonight mostly came off of some lucky breaks. Some nights it’s like that.”

Winnipeg 3, Toronto 0--Goaltender Alain Chevrier made 30 saves for his second NHL shutout as the Jets defeated the Maple Leafs at Winnipeg, Canada.

Randy Carlyle, Pat Elynuik and Doug Smail scored for Winnipeg, and Dale Hawerchuk contributed 2 assists.

The loss was the Maple Leafs’ seventh in their last eight games.

Washington 3, Hartford 2--Dave Christian scored a power-play goal with 10:53 remaining as the Capitals edged the Whalers at Landover, Md.

Christian scored his goal after a scramble in front of the Whalers’ goal. It was Washington’s third victory in four home games.
