San Diego County Mothers Against Drunk Driving kicked off the 3rd annual “Red Ribbon Campaign” Tuesday at University Towne Centre in an effort to alert citizens to the danger of drinking alcohol and driving.

To support the holiday awareness program, they are asking motorists to tie a red ribbon to their vehicle.

“We expect more people to participate this year,” Cindy Roark, president of the San Diego chapter of MADD, said. “So far, we’ve cut over 60,000 red holiday ribbons and anticipate cutting more. The nationwide program has increased participation--in Las Vegas, 1 million ribbons have been cut by DUI offenders.”

Last year, MADD distributed 20,000 ribbons and according to Roark not many were seen around the county.

“We didn’t have as many organizations participating in the program in the past,” Roark said. “Plus, it’s always harder to view the ribbons in larger counties such as San Diego. Hopefully, with the increase in involvement by various law enforcement and community groups, our message will be received.”

MADD is asking that ribbons be placed on the left door handle of vehicles or somewhere visible and left there through New Year’s Day to serve as a reminder to “think before you drink” and to change the meaning of “tie one on.”

Ribbons can be picked up countywide at 7-Eleven stores, the Food Pavilion at UTC or at the MADD office, 510 N. Escondido Blvd., Suite 2B, Escondido.
