Lynwood : Anti-Gang Project Funded
The Lynwood City Council has approved the implementation of a $40,000 project aimed at preventing youths from joining gangs.
The project will include establishment of an after-school recreational program for elementary students, a resource center for assisting troubled youths in finding counseling help and an employment program to find jobs.
The project will be implemented over a period of time but most phases are expected to begin operating in January, Councilwoman Evelyn Wells said.
Wells formed the Ad Hoc Committee on Gang Alternatives more than 6 months ago to study the gang problem and develop possible solutions. The 10-member committee held hearings and discussions with specialists involved with gang problems before making its recommendations. The council allocated the funds for the project in its 1988-89 budget.
