Local News in Brief : Growth Initiative Qualifies for Ballot

Share

An initiative that would place growth limits on residential and commercial construction in Pasadena has qualified for the March 7 city election, City Clerk Pamela Swift announced Wednesday.

The initiative, sponsored by Pasadena Residents in Defense of Their Environment (PRIDE), would establish a ceiling of 250 apartment and condominium units a year and would limit annual commercial construction to a citywide total of 250,000 square feet of floor space. The measure contains a number of exemptions, including one for commercial projects smaller than 25,000 square feet.

Earlier this week, the Board of Directors voted to place a rival growth-limit measure on the ballot. That measure would impose residential and commercial growth limits for up to two years while the city develops permanent controls. The PRIDE initiative would be in effect until the end of 1999.

Pasadena voters rejected a slow-growth measure last June that would have imposed a two-year moratorium on major construction.
