A bag of sterilized surgical waste fell off a truck and broke open in Huntington Beach, spewing bags of blood, tubing and surgical equipment over a major intersection. Three bags spilled along Warner Avenue near Beach Boulevard, but only one broke open, prompting police to call Orange County Health Department officials. The bags had been steam sterilized to remove viruses and bacteria, and they posed no threat to the public, health officials said. The spillage was traced to Rainbow Disposal Co. Inc., a Huntington Beach transport firm. Rainbow was taking the bags from nearby Fountain Valley Regional Hospital and Medical Center to a landfill. No one was cited.
