Local News in Brief : Huntington Beach : Council Opposes Airport Site for Los Alamitos

Share

The City Council voted this week to oppose consideration of the Los Alamitos Armed Forces Reserve Center as a future commercial airport site.

The Los Alamitos base is one of 24 potential sites that have been identified by the Airport Site Coalition Group of civic and business volunteers.

“We’ve already got Long Beach” Airport, said Richard Barnard, assistant to the Huntington Beach city administrator. “We see (a commercial airport at Los Alamitos) as a conflict with Long Beach because we already have enough air traffic with Long Beach and Los Alamitos.”

The Huntington Beach City Council voted 5-2 to oppose the Los Alamitos base as an alternative site. Councilmen Jack Kelly and Wes Bannister voted against the resolution.

Reasons for objecting to the Los Alamitos location include the fact that more than 150,000 people live within a 5-mile radius of the reserve center. Also, traffic flow would be crippled in the area because of the lack of north/south arteries and the overburdened east-west streets, according to officials.

The Garden Grove City Council has also opposed the idea of a commercial airport at Los Alamitos and urged Huntington Beach officials to do the same.
