Local News in Brief : Quarry Operations Allowed to Continue

Share

The Azusa City Council has approved a compromise that will allow a rock quarry firm that has mined the San Gabriel Mountains behind the city for 32 years to continue operating under guidelines designed to protect the environment.

Agreement was reached this week among Azusa, the neighboring city of Duarte and the Azusa Rock Co. on 13 measures that will limit where and when quarry operations are done, redirect gravel-truck traffic, limit blasting, curtail dust and generally give Azusa more control over the operations.

The agreement disappointed some Azusa and Duarte residents, who complained about the dust and noise pollution and the 800-foot mining scar on the hillside.

The leaders of one Azusa citizens’ group have said they may sue to block the compromise and get the quarry closed.

Azusa Rock officials said the compromise could cost them up to $4 million to implement.
